KEF Wireless Subwoofer and Soundbar Honored with Pair of CES Innovations Awards

New York, NY - November 10, 2009 - At its International CES New York Press Preview, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced KEF as an International CES Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering Awards honoree for two of its recent introductions.

The company's new HTB2SE-W wireless subwoofer and the
HTF8003 soundbar were both recognized as winners.

Products entered in this celebrated program are judged by a influential group of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the trade press. They look for cutting-edge consumer electronic
products.

The Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase at CES will feature these two KEF products throughout the show. The wireless subwoofer and the soundbar will also be promoted at the Consumer Electronic Showcase starting on Tuesday January 5.

KEF Speakers and the BBC, In Pursuit of Perfection

Kef Speakers StoreKEF Speakers and the BBC have been very closely linked since the early days of KEF. First of all, Raymond Cooke, the founder of KEF, worked in the BBC Engineering Designs Department in the early 1950s. There, he worked with other influential sound engineers. Then, in the early 1960s, KEF agreed to manufacture the BBC designed LS5/1A monitor. Other well known monitor speakers were also manufactured by KEF for the BBC well into the 1970s. KEF’s meticulous approach to production engineering and attention to detail fit perfectly with the task of manufacturing speakers to very tight tolerances (which of course is what the BBC needed).

One of the early decisions was the use of new type materials for loudspeaker diaphragms and surrounds. KEF utilized various components out of polystyrene and aluminum foil. The BBC was experimenting with plastics. The result of the experimentation and utilization process led to the bookshelf speaker concept. Smaller speakers, still with great sound, could now be produced without sacrificing sound quality.
Another result of all the modelling and innovation was the 2-way speaker system. This was a result of producing a smaller sound source that would still produce controlled acoustics all the way
to 100kHz. Further work allowed a unique addition for the bass to this smaller configuration, and so a 3-way speaker version was introduced. One of these models was the KM1 KM1 Studio Monitor.

This 3-way active studio monitor was designed to address the BBC’s desire for a system that could deliver accurate reproduction at high levels. The bass section comprised four 12” drivers (SP1196), two midrange units and a tweeter. From the outside the system looks impressive enough but on the inside was a absolutely genius set of engineering solutions to the problem of reproducing high output levels with low distortion. The first system went into operation at the BBC’s studios in 1982.

You may have heard the name, but do you know the background of one of the world's leading audio speaker manufacturer? KEF Speakers have a distinction among speaker companies, in that the company was founded in England.

In 1961, Raymond Cooke, an ex-BBC Electrical Engineer started what we know as KED Electronics because he wanted to experiment with new technologies and materials. His goal was superior acoustic quality for reproducing original performances as near to lifelike sounds as possible. He was initially located near the Kent Engineering and Foundry in Kent, England, hence the name KEF.

The reputation of KEF Speakers grew almost instantly as the inventiveness and quality was recognized early on. Audiophiles hold KEF in the highest esteem for its innovative and high-performance loudspeakers. During the 1990s, the home theatre market exploded, and KEF was determined to provide affordable, high performance speakers and subwoofers to meet the demand. One of the innovations was the KHT2005 system, which featured the "egg-shaped" satellite speaker. This high quality speakers, with its cast aluminum enclosure and superior acoustic properties was a standard in the market for a number of years.

Another innovation to meet the needs of the market place was the KIT100, which intergrates the Satellite speakers, the subwoofer, and the DVD and achieves a near surround sound effect with just two front loudpeakers. This is accomplished with unique placement of speaker component parts that convince the listener that they are totally surrounded by sound, even though there are no extra center and rear located speakers.

LEF was also an innovator in the use of modelling in building and testing prototypes. This virtual production lab has led to even very recent changes and enhancements to an already impressive line of audio speakers. The constant aim is to provide better sounds without having to rely on more and more speakers and equipment. For example, in 2005 KEF introduced a unique solution to the problem of bass quality of sound. In the past, to get better bass, the enclosure had to be increased in size. Thanks to KEF, carbon was used to enhance the bass even from a compact cabinet. The result...Less restrictions on the cabinet size of subwoofer speakers. This is called ACE technology, and an ACE loaded box enclosure has to be heard to be believed.

Even though KEF has been in existence for close to 50 years, it is still at the forefront of innovation and hands-on experimentation. It is no wonder that KEF is known as the audiophile’s ultimate loudspeaker manufacturer.
